FAQ

What’s the scoop?
Our licensed/certified teachers teach you the “rules of the road” in an interactive classroom environment. Then we hit the streets with licensed driving instructors. Our program is certified and licensed by the Kansas State Department of Education and approved by the Kansas Department of Insurance.

What kind of vehicle will you be driving?

Either Volkswagen New Beetles or Chrysler PT Cruisers, all with automatic transmission. Each car has a dual brake system.

What are the driving laws and requirements by the State of Missouri or Kansas?

We have provided some helpful links below:
Missouri Graduated Driver License Law
KS Driver’s License and Vehicle Info.

How much time does it take?

Eight (8) hours of classroom instruction followed by, at least six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel driving instruction with a licensed instructor. We are truly committed to our student’s (your teen’s) safety. Completing the behind-the-wheel portion of the course will vary depending on the student’s skill and availability. We make every effort to help instill good defensive driving habits for the new driver.

What happens when the course is completed?

Kansas Students:

When you successfully complete the course you will receive a state certificate, known as a DE99, which you will take to the Driver’s License Station (DLS) to obtain the restricted license as outlined in the Kansas Graduated License System. The course we offer takes care of your written test and the actual driving test, both of which you would normally be given at the DLS to receive your license.

On March 27, 2009, Kansas approved a Graduated Driver’s License system, (GDL) for new drivers under the age of 17 who obtain a driver’s permit or license after January 1, 2010. The GDL applies the conditions, limitations, and restrictions in place as of December 31, 2009, to those who hold any valid driver’s license or permit as of January 1, 2010.For more information click on the following link.  GDL_public.pdf

Missouri Students:

Our class covers defensive driving techniques and the basic driving laws needed to prepare you for taking the Missouri written driving exam. Our individualized behind-the-wheel instruction prepares you for the behind-the-wheel driving test. In addition, upon successful completion of our course you may be eligible for an insurance discount. Please check with your insurance agent.

What happens if I don’t pass my driving in six hours?

You may receive additional hours of behind-the-wheel instruction at an additional cost per hour until you do pass.

What do I need to take the course?

You will need to have a current instruction permit or driver's license, which you will bring to class. We will also screen your vision on the day of the class, or you may see an optometrist of your choice.

How do I enroll?

You may enroll by completing the application and submitting it, along with your deposit. You may obtain an application by either contacting us by phone or by printing an application from this website. Prior to mailing in your application please call us for class availability.

OK, so how much does this cost?

The cost of the 8 hour of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving is $415.

A $10 fee, payable to Schedule2Drive, is due at the time of on-line registration. This will allow the student and parent to schedule the required drives using the Schedule2Drive internet scheduling program.

How do I pay?

Cash, check, money orders or credit card (VISA & MC) are accepted. $220 is due at time of application, with the balance due on the day of the classroom session.

The $10 fee is payable to Schedule2Drive by money order or you can pay on line via credit card.

When is class offered and when do I drive?

Our eight (8) classes are held on designated Saturdays from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Students must complete the eight (8) class before beginning the six (6) hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.  For your convenience, our driving instructor will pick you up and drop you off at your home, school or work.

The Kansas Driver’s Handbook says that a vision test and written test will be performed in order for a student to get his or her instruction permit. Our info says that students will have their vision screened at our school and they will take a written test after the 8 hour class session. What is the difference between these tests?

The written test that the Kansas Driver's Handbook refers to is a short 25 questions multiple choice quiz. This quiz is very basic. It is this test that the student must take to get his or her instruction permit (often referred to as the "learner's"permit). Kansas requires all new drivers to obtain an instruction permit before they can legally drive behind the wheel with a licensed driver 21 years or older, regardless whether they take a driver's education course or not. The vision test will be required at the time the instruction permit is issued. When the student takes our course he or she will, once again, have to have a visual acuity test, which we'll do at our school. Throughout the day of class we cover defensive driving and the state and uniform driving laws and then at the end of the day we administer a comprehensive 62 question written test. This is the same test that is given at the DMV when the student goes to get his or her class C driver's license.

Typically, how far apart are the driving sessions with your teachers?

Following the 8 hour class you will schedule 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, spread out over 5 drives. The first 4 drives will be 1 hr 15 each. The 5th drive, our highway drive, is a one hour drive. The frequency of drives will vary depending on the students experience and availability.

Do the students who reside in Kansas have to have their 50 hours of supervised driving done before they earn a Kansas DE99?

No, many of our students have very little or no driving experience. That's fine because this is what we are experienced at doing: instructing, coaching and advising the inexperienced driver and then finally evaluate their skills. To successfully complete each driving task during the 6 hours of driving the student is expected to perform these tasks without instructor prompts. For those students residing in Kansas, once the student successfully demonstrates proficiency on each task performed our instructor will issue to the student the Kansas certificate, known as the DE99. The DE99 can be taken to the DMV and exchanged for either the "Restricted" license or the permanent "Class C" license.

The Missouri student will also go through the same driving tasks and evaluations as those students from Kansas. However, the Missouri student will not be issued the DE99 certificate, since this is Kansas specific. Both the written test and the behind-the-wheel instruction will prepare the Missouri students to take the Missouri written and driving test, which they must take at the Missouri DMV.

Will the student receive a discount on insurance premiums for taking your driving course?

Buggin' and Cruisin' Driving School is approved by the Kansas Department of Insurance. For those living in Kansas you insurance company should honor a discount upon successful completion of our course. For the Missouri resident most insurance companies will provide a discount to those students who successfully complete our defensive driving course. You should check with your insurance agent for applicable discounts.
